What smoke odor actually is
Smoke leaves two things behind. The particles — soot, char and ash — you can see on a windowsill. The gases you cannot see condense onto every surface as the building cools, and the heavier part of that condensate stays put, soaking into anything porous and releasing slowly for months. Those released compounds are what the EPA classifies as volatile organic compounds, and they are the odor. They are also the reason the smell is worse on warm days and in closed rooms: warmth drives them out of the material, and a closed room lets them accumulate. Wiping the surface removes the particle layer. It does not remove what went into the wood, the drywall paper, the carpet backing or the sofa cushion, which is why homes cleaned by well-meaning owners — or by contractors working without a protocol — smell fine for a week and then do not.
Finding the reservoirs
Odor removal starts with knowing where the odor is coming from, and that is a sampling question. Surface samples from the candidate reservoirs — unfinished framing and the underside of the roof deck in the attic, the back of drywall where it is accessible, carpet padding, the interiors of closets and cabinets, upholstered furniture and mattresses — are read by microscopy for residue. Air samples from the affected rooms, taken with the space closed and warm, capture the volatile fraction and are compared against background from an unaffected space. The EPA's guidance on smoke and indoor air is clear that residue can persist indoors long after the air outside has cleared; the sampling plan is what turns "it still smells in the back bedroom" into "the reservoir is the carpet padding and the closet framing." The laboratory report, with locations photographed and logged under chain of custody, is what the protocol and the claim are built from.
Contents: clean, restore or replace
Contents are sorted by material and by the sample results, and the sorting is recorded item by item:

The inventory — item, location, photograph, sample reference, disposition — is the contents claim. Removing the odor from the structure
Once the reservoirs are known, the sequence is fixed: source removal first, cleaning second, treatment third, verification last. Contaminated porous materials that cannot be cleaned — insulation, carpet padding, in some cases drywall — come out. Remaining surfaces are HEPA-vacuumed and wet-cleaned. Surfaces that stay but still hold residue, most often unfinished framing and the roof deck underside, are sealed or otherwise treated so that what remains in the wood cannot re-emit. Deodorisation methods are applied after that, not instead of it. The work is performed by certified professionals — the relevant IICRC credential, the Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician, explicitly covers cleaning and deodorisation of fire-damaged structures and contents — under a licensed industrial hygienist's protocol aligned with ANSI/IICRC S700. Then the original locations are sampled again, with the rooms closed and warm, and the clearance report shows the numbers at background.
The attic is usually one of the reservoirs
In a house where the fire was inside or next door, the largest odor reservoir is almost always above the ceiling: bare rafters, the underside of the sheathing and the insulation lying on it. Treating it means removing insulation and cleaning and sealing the deck and framing, which has to be sequenced with any roof repair — and if the roof was cut or burned, the structure needs a licensed roofer's or engineer's inspection before anyone works up there.
